Can documents issued by a Czech embassy or consulate be apostilled?
Sadly, it is not possible. Regrettably, the Czech authorities have not established any procedure to apostille documents issued by Czech embassies or consulates.
We have actually attempted to process such a request. We submitted various documents from a Czech consulate to different state authorities in the Czech Republic that handle apostilles for Czech documents (specifically, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) in an attempt to have them legalized. In every case, our request was refused, and we were informed that this category of documents cannot be apostilled.
Moreover, the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs (the very ministry overseeing all Czech embassies and consulates) informed us that documents from embassies and consulates are considered for internal use within the Czech Republic. They are not intended to undergo any additional procedure of international legalization, including an apostille.
Based on our experience, documents issued by Czech consulates are often accepted directly in the country where that particular consulate is located. For example, a police clearance certificate issued by the Czech Consulate in Canada may be recognized in Canada. However, this is not always the case and can vary.
