What is consular legalization?
Consular legalization in the Czech Republic is an additional certification of Czech documents that makes them valid for use in other countries. This method of certification is also often called "superlegalization" or "consular certification" because the final authentication is carried out at the consulate of the country where the document will be used, directly by a consular officer who applies the appropriate stamp and signatures.
This method can be used to certify any official documents from the Czech Republic, such as documents issued by government authorities or Czech notaries. This form of document authentication abroad is rarely required – it is needed only in a limited number of countries that do not accept Czech documents without additional certification and do not recognize an apostille.
How to determine whether it is required
The requirements depend on the country where you plan to use the Czech document. The Czech Republic has specific agreements with each country regarding the mutual recognition of documents. Our website has a form to check the legalization requirements for documents from the Czech Republic – the best option is to enter the country, and the form will generate a detailed response explaining what type of certification is required for that country.
It is quite difficult to list all countries that require consular legalization. However, based on our experience, the countries where this type of certification is most commonly required include the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Dubai), Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and nearly all African countries.
In practice, the requirement for consular legalization is quite rare. More often, an apostille is sufficient, or documents from the Czech Republic are accepted without any additional certification (again, you can use the verification form via the link above).
You can always contact us with this question – we will clarify what type of certification is required for your specific situation and research information tailored to your case. This is no trouble for us, and the service is always free.
The consular legalization process for documents in the Czech Republic
The procedure consists of the following steps:
- First, the document that will undergo this process is required. It must initially be certified by an official Czech authority, such as a notary or government authority.
- Next, the document undergoes additional verification by the Czech authorities, often called "higher authentication" ("Vyšší ověření"), in which a special certification stamp is applied. The logic behind this step is that the Czech Republic essentially double-checks and further confirms the document's authenticity. This certification is carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice of the Czech Republic, or the Notarial Chamber of the Czech Republic, depending on the type of document and the authority that originally certified it.
- At the final stage, the document must be certified by the authorities of the country where it will be used. Most often, this certification is carried out at the consulate of the destination country, which is why this type of authentication is called "consular legalization." Many countries have diplomatic missions in the Czech Republic where this can be done, although some do not (for example, the UAE does not have one). In such cases, the final certification is usually carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the destination country within its own territory. Essentially, this step ensures that the country where the document will be used officially recognizes the certification as valid within its territory.
